National Workshop on DCD (Stockholm, Sweden)

National Workshop on DCD (Stockholm, Sweden)
October 14-15, 2015

I had the great joy of presenting at this meeting. Sweden is working toward commencing a controlled DCD programme.
What struck me, apart from the beautiful country, was how culturally similar the UK and Swedish intensive care community are.

We are both bottom of the league table in ICU beds per 100,000 population (however one defines a critical care bed).

I hope this fact has nothing to do with why we make similar ICU withdrawal of life sustaining treatment decisions.
I trust not as Portugal has even fewer ICU beds but make very different withdrawal decisions.

So, I see no reason that controlled DCD, similar to what we are doing in the UK, wouldn't work in Swedne and be acceptable to their doctors, nurses and public.
